Bulgaria has remarkable history and this month has marked 140 years since the infamous Battle of Shipka Pass. 5,000 Bulgarian Opalchensti and 2,500 Russian Empire troops successfully defended their position against 40,000 Ottoman soldiers. The battle was fierce and raged for 3 days in the hills above the village of Shipka in the Stara Planina area of the Balkan Mountains. The mountains range across the centre of Bulgaria from the Black Sea in the East to Sofia in the West.
he key battle was fought in July 1877 and is remembered today in towns and villages across Bulgaria as the genesis of the liberation of Bulgaria against 500 years of Ottoman rule. Today the charming little village of Shipka is well worth a visit, with its beautiful Russian Style memorial church and the nearby Valley of the Thracian Kings and the Rose valleys of Kazanlak.
